5 Other Drinks You Can Enjoy With Steak Besides Red Wine
Tuesday, January 14th, 2020
It has been a long time tradition to enjoy a glass of red wine while eating a steak. Red wine and red meat pair well naturally together but not everyone enjoys red wine. Thankfully, there are other great beverages, both with alcohol and without, that go just as well with your favorite steak. These include beer, whisky, martinis, white wine, and nonalcoholic beverages like club soda.
Beer
Porters and stouts are recommended to accompany a good cut of beef. These dark beers have the ability to hold their own when paired with a delicious cut of steak like a ribeye. You may want to request a glass with a little bitterness to help cut down the richness of the meat. If you order a leaner cut, such as the flank or skirt, you will do well with nutty, brown ale.
Whiskey
Whiskey is a brown spirit with rich caramel notes that pairs well with more flavorful cuts of red meat. You can choose between rye or bourbon, but the popular option is scotch. Scotch is an especially good choice with a grilled steak, as the smoky notes of this drink copy the flavor provided by the grill. Don’t use a mixer with your whiskey, but enjoy it over ice to experience the full flavor of this steak and drink combination.
Martinis
A martini is a classic cocktail with a palate-cleansing compliment that will not compete with a rich steak. Martinis are most often served ice-cold with an olive as a garnish. This drink will not overload your taste buds and will allow you to enjoy the great flavor of the drink and steak.
White wine
If you choose the right white wine, you can pair it well with a steak. Find a full-bodied white wine so it can stand up to the flavor of the steak. A Chardonnay, which is a richer wine with a little crispness, works well to cut through the meat’s flavor.
Nonalcoholic drinks
You do not have to pair an alcohol beverage with your steak. There are non alcoholic drinks that work well with any steak dinner. Pomegranate or cranberry juices are two of the the best beverages that can clean your palate and cut through the heaviness of a steak. If you do not like the tart flavor of these juices, you can dilute them a bit with water.
Another palate cleanser to enjoy with steak is club soda, with either lime or lemon. This nonalcoholic beverage will help cut through the richness of your steak, while the acid from the citrus will balance the two flavors.
