BBQ mistakes. BBQ in Amarillo, Texas

Whether it’s a burger that’s charred on the outside and still frozen in the center, or chicken that’s been cooked to dryness, everyone has their own tale of woe when it comes to barbequing. But don’t worry, most of these BBQ mistakes are easy to avoid with a little bit of knowledge and preparation. Here are some of the most common BBQ mistakes people make, as well as tips for avoiding them.

Not Cleaning Your Grill

A clean grill is a happy grill. While it may seem logical to just use the same grate over and over again, bits of leftover food can cause flare-ups that can burn your meal. It’s best to take a minute or two after you’ve got the fire going to scrape off any debris from previous grilling. Doing this will make sure there isn’t any food left that could alter the taste of what you’re about to cook. When your grill is clean, food is less likely to stick when you remove it from the grill too.

Overcooking Or Undercooking Your Food

The biggest mistake with most foods is overcooking or undercooking them. If you find yourself constantly burning your burgers, try moving the grill down to a lower heat. It’ll take longer, but it’ll give you more control over the finished product.

The easiest way to avoid these mistakes is to get a meat thermometer. Without a thermometer, you’re just guessing. Not every grill and fire is the same, so timing alone won’t work. The more you grill, the easier it will get to time it out and know when the meat is done, but until then, a thermometer is your best bet.

Opening The Lid Too Often

It’s tempting to check and see how things are going by opening the lid, but this can make a mess. Every time you open it, heat escapes and your temperature lowers. If you need to turn or move something on the grill, do so as quickly as possible and then close it up again.

Poor Time Management

Whenever you’re barbequing, figuring out what to cook and when is a good idea. Always start with enough time to marinate and preheat the grill so you’re not rushed when it’s time to start grilling.
